About MUT
The Ministry of Urban Development and Construction (MUI) is a federal government ministry in Ethiopia that is responsible for the development and management of urban areas in the country. The MUI was established in 2013 by the merger of the Ministry of Urban Development and the Ministry of Construction.
The MUI’s main responsibilities include:
- Formulating and implementing policies and strategies for urban development
- Providing technical assistance to urban governments
- Overseeing the construction of public infrastructure in urban areas
- Promoting sustainable urban development
- Ensuring compliance with building codes and standards
- Managing urban land use
- Providing housing for low-income households
The MUI has a number of programs and initiatives underway to promote urban development in Ethiopia. These include:
- The Urban Development Package (UDP), which is a five-pillar program that aims to improve the lives of urban residents
- The Integrated Housing Development Programme (IHDP), which is a program that provides affordable housing for low-income households
- The Youth Development Programme (YDP), which provides training and employment opportunities for young people in urban areas
- The Provision of Land, Infrastructure, Services and Facilities (PLISPF), which aims to improve the provision of basic services in urban areas
- The Support for Rural-Urban and Urban-Urban Linkages (SURUL), which aims to promote economic development and reduce poverty in rural and urban areas
The MUI is working with a number of partners to implement its programs and initiatives. These partners include the United Nations, the World Bank, the African Development Bank, and the governments of other countries.
