About ERCS
The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) has a rich history, established back in 1935, making it one of Ethiopia’s oldest and largest humanitarian organizations. Its primary focus is providing vital services to communities impacted by both natural and manmade disasters. These services encompass emergency responses, ambulance and first aid provisions, family reunification, essential drugs, water and sanitation facilities, and various other humanitarian aid initiatives. Furthermore, ERCS is actively engaged in disaster risk reduction programs, aimed at fostering resilience among households and communities.
ERCS boasts a well-structured organization, comprising 12 Regional Offices, 34 Zonal Branches, and 131 District/Woreda Branches, along with 599 Woreda Red Cross Committees and 5871 Kebele Red Cross Committees.
Through its disaster risk reduction programs, ERCS addresses critical areas such as food security, climate change adaptation, livelihood diversification, and institutional capacity building. The ultimate goal is to empower communities and households, enabling them to withstand and recover from adversities effectively.
To achieve its noble objectives, ERCS works in close collaboration with the Ethiopian Government, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), partnering National Societies, dedicated volunteers, and the communities they serve. This fruitful partnership enhances the impact and effectiveness of ERCS’s humanitarian efforts, amplifying their reach and support to those in need.
